For the purpose of this debate, humanity is threatened by the Paintress, a mysterious being who paints a number on a giant monolith once every year. Everyone of that age instantly disappears in an event called the “Gommage.” As the number decreases annually, humanity moves closer to extinction.
To stop this cycle, volunteer groups called Expeditions are sent across the sea to locate and kill the Paintress, despite all previous Expeditions having failed and survival being considered extremely unlikely. Members of the Expeditions are celebrated as heroes willing to sacrifice their remaining years for humanity’s future. Expedition 33 is the latest of these missions, composed largely of people who know they may not live long enough to see another year regardless of the mission’s outcome.
